How Facebook is falling short as a weather communication tool

As I read articles like this I sit and think to myself that if the people so concerned about their weather message getting across to their followers would instead concentrate on the more glaring public communication problems first, we could fix many of them.

Of much greater concern is that the NWS is striving to increase warning times yet media is, in some cases, counteracting these efforts by ignoring the agency and attempting to create/issue their own products.

In addition, common colors for types of weather watches and warnings are not at all created equal. 15 years ago yellow meant severe, red meant tornado, blue meant flood, and so on… Now we have 256 color contoured bullshit and again, some TV guys taking creative control over the message the public sees.

So while social media is a problem for timely messaging, the message itself is where the problem starts. And if you’re a serial social media life saver and you’re concerned about your timely posts being retransmitted well after the fact by complete idiots, well, go erase the posts that could pose a problem. It only takes a minute.

I’ve never used a more quick and capable blogging platform than Tumblr and believe me, I’ve moved a lot of posts between a lot of platforms to find the right one for me. The one problem I have (read: the ONLY problem I have) is this awful dieing post thing. It’s random and it’s ridiculous. Whether I’m saving a draft or trying to post, I have to cross my fingers each and every time. Perhaps someone from the Tumblr support staff can tell me why this is and if there is anything I can do on my end to fix it…

Another Unsolicited Opinion About Malaysian Flight MH17

This we know:

  1. A Boeing 777 was shot down with 298 people aboard on July 17, 2014.
  2. Of the 298 people who perished, one was a U.S. citizen.
  3. Malaysian Airlines is not based in the U.S. although they do fly to 11 U.S. cities.
  4. The incident occurred near the Ukraine-Russia border where pro-Russian rebels apparently control everything and could be the trigger source for the missile.

I’m having trouble understanding a few things.

  1. Why is the U.S. entrenched in this incident? I understand this is a horrible tragedy and I understand nations should to band together in times like this. I do not understand how the U.S. can justify accusations and threats regarding the incident. It directly affects one U.S. citizen, after all.
  2. The U.S. says inspectors cannot access the crash site to begin a full investigation. This confuses me as about every 20 seconds there is a fresh new picture or video posted to social media from the area. U.S. media is onsite creating news segments while standing next to refrigerated boxcars allegedly packed with bodies. Clearly the area can be accessed and has a solid communications system to boot.
  3. imageWhy should the world probe the crash? Sure, a couple of Americans should be a part of it for good measure but a full out U.S. led investigation is out of line.
  4. imageHey media, stop using this shit to make U.S. citizens hate Russia. We do not need another war right now and in case you have not noticed, things have gotten pretty real on the global warfare front now that we’ve sold a bunch of nice military equipment to other countries and trained their troops for them.

I write this because I’m sick of the news. I’m sick of seeing how the U.S. is dabbling in everyone’s business. These countries have been battling over borders since the beginning of time.
In the Middle East, same deal. Little dark guys in turbines have always treated women like shit and have always practiced law as eye for an eye. It’s the way it is and the way it has always been. We should stop trying to change them. Oh, and let them war with each other. World peace is not necessarily necessary.

So basically, what I’m saying is - let the world be and let’s focus on ourselves. Sure, there should be humanitarian efforts in as many places as will have us, but not war. As soon as we are unappreciated, we cut the funding, we cut the supply, we cut the protection. Simple as that.

A couple Simrad shots from our boat while we relaxed over the weekend. I took them to show the lake temp at 34” below the surface which happened to be 79.3 degrees. This water temp should definitely be at a deeper thermocline this time of year but with unseasonably cool (and record breaking) temps for 4-5 consecutive days, it’s to be expected I guess. Burrrrr

Looks like NWSOUN had to tap into their snow forecast graphics to depict the amount of rain we are about to have in OK.
Also, the ECMWF is dumping hard too. An interesting heavy rain event is on our doorstep!

Here’s a look at 60 hours out, total precip as represented by the NAM, GFS & ECMWF. All three are generous to areas in dire need of water but intensity bullseyes are quite different for each, geographically. ECM really takes off with rainfall totals - and over a large area to boot. I’m anxious to see how this plays out. Bring on the rain!

Things are looking up again in Oklahoma and Texas regarding drought-busting rain thanks to the polar vortex or non-polar vortex, depending on who you ask.

Regardless what words the scientists want to fight about, it’s bringing very unseasonal weather to OK and that makes me very happy. We should be able to break at least 3-5 temp records so for this extreme weather junkie, it’s all good!

So, scientists, you go try to figure out what this silly thing is called and I’ll continue doing my job to market it and we’ll all do okay. Deal?

(I posted an ECMWF map for the public to see. Just send me the bill.)

Happening now in Oklahoma. Nothing severe but certainly is pretty off the back balcony!

Incredible amount of rain ongoing and about to train across Grand Rapids, MI. Increased dynamics in this area will make it an interesting one to watch over the next several hours.
