Since we’re on the subject of weather enthusiasts vs. meteorologists, I’d like point out my friend Danny Neal’s very popular facebook page. Danny is not a meteorologist and says so right on this page. He’s followed by 111,000 people because he produces interesting content that people want to consume. No hype, just information in an understandable format. I wonder if he’ll qualify for the weather source seal of approval? Doubt it.
But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I want to talk about branding.
See, Danny is smart. He’s making himself into a brand; something most people cannot relate to or successfully pull off. I see people constantly produce high-end content but are rarely recognized for it. This is appropriate if one is being paid to do so but since the subject at hand is the weather space, I’ll venture to guess very few are.
So, unless you’re being paid for your content, stop posting it for the benefit and acclaim of other sources! Become a thought leader and gain the recognition you deserve among your peers, regardless the industry.

Social Weather Supremacy

Over the past year or so there has been a lot of chatter by meteorologists about the “enthusiasts” role as a weather source on social media. Enthusiasts are commonly criticized for posting flashy maps, poor interpretations of data, as well as unfounded forecasts. Meteorologists say enthusiasts muddy the waters and generally cause problems.

As a businessman, I see the same ridiculousness spewed daily from “thought leaders”, only the topic is of a business nature. Just like in the weather space, idiocy is rampant in the form of advice, incorrect data, or simply showboating for attention. Sound familiar? These accounts are easily identified and even easier to ignore, or at least take with a grain of salt.

I say there are much more pressing things to be concerned with regarding the public and their consumption of weather information. In short time, they will find their way to accurate weather information. If they choose to follow a poor source on social media, they’ll figure out pretty quick on their own when forecasts do not pan out. Let them.

Chose the hottest day of the year to have shelving added to our garage. I felt sorry for the installers until I realized after they left that all the shit I had moved out of their way was now in need of being cleaned up and lifted onto the shelves. It’s a handy addition to the house and has definitely freed up a lot of floor space. Highly recommended.

This girl is probably in the process of being murdered at a park somewhere in Sand Springs but let’s not worry about that and instead, take a look at what is actually going on here:
Chick apparently needed a job; went out and got one: kudos
She has a phone or computer plus internet connection and cannot afford to go to walmart to buy a black polo
Hopefully her new job will not require her to write, spell, or likely count
She has a car with gas in it. Anyone want to take bets on the insurance and registration being up to date?

Heartbreaking story here. Just a quick social media note though about presentation. The main post covered the occurrence. The occurrence is again mentioned in the title of the story transferred from the page by facebook. The occurrence is yet again mentioned in the summary text also listed by facebook.
If you’re ever posting content from your website, ensure you adjust your text to be a little more informative. Once your link populates with content from your page that is pulled in from facebook, simply click once over any text and it will become editable.
Don’t be the cause of poor sharing.

How Facebook is falling short as a weather communication tool

As I read articles like this I sit and think to myself that if the people so concerned about their weather message getting across to their followers would instead concentrate on the more glaring public communication problems first, we could fix many of them.

Of much greater concern is that the NWS is striving to increase warning times yet media is, in some cases, counteracting these efforts by ignoring the agency and attempting to create/issue their own products.

In addition, common colors for types of weather watches and warnings are not at all created equal. 15 years ago yellow meant severe, red meant tornado, blue meant flood, and so on… Now we have 256 color contoured bullshit and again, some TV guys taking creative control over the message the public sees.

So while social media is a problem for timely messaging, the message itself is where the problem starts. And if you’re a serial social media life saver and you’re concerned about your timely posts being retransmitted well after the fact by complete idiots, well, go erase the posts that could pose a problem. It only takes a minute.

I’ve never used a more quick and capable blogging platform than Tumblr and believe me, I’ve moved a lot of posts between a lot of platforms to find the right one for me. The one problem I have (read: the ONLY problem I have) is this awful dieing post thing. It’s random and it’s ridiculous. Whether I’m saving a draft or trying to post, I have to cross my fingers each and every time. Perhaps someone from the Tumblr support staff can tell me why this is and if there is anything I can do on my end to fix it…
Now crossing my fingers that this post will post…

Another Unsolicited Opinion About Malaysian Flight MH17

This we know:

  1. A Boeing 777 was shot down with 298 people aboard on July 17, 2014.
  2. Of the 298 people who perished, one was a U.S. citizen.
  3. Malaysian Airlines is not based in the U.S. although they do fly to 11 U.S. cities.
  4. The incident occurred near the Ukraine-Russia border where pro-Russian rebels apparently control everything and could be the trigger source for the missile.

I’m having trouble understanding a few things.

  1. Why is the U.S. entrenched in this incident? I understand this is a horrible tragedy and I understand nations should to band together in times like this. I do not understand how the U.S. can justify accusations and threats regarding the incident. It directly affects one U.S. citizen, after all.
  2. The U.S. says inspectors cannot access the crash site to begin a full investigation. This confuses me as about every 20 seconds there is a fresh new picture or video posted to social media from the area. U.S. media is onsite creating news segments while standing next to refrigerated boxcars allegedly packed with bodies. Clearly the area can be accessed and has a solid communications system to boot.
  3. imageWhy should the world probe the crash? Sure, a couple of Americans should be a part of it for good measure but a full out U.S. led investigation is out of line.
  4. imageHey media, stop using this shit to make U.S. citizens hate Russia. We do not need another war right now and in case you have not noticed, things have gotten pretty real on the global warfare front now that we’ve sold a bunch of nice military equipment to other countries and trained their troops for them.

I write this because I’m sick of the news. I’m sick of seeing how the U.S. is dabbling in everyone’s business. These countries have been battling over borders since the beginning of time.
In the Middle East, same deal. Little dark guys in turbines have always treated women like shit and have always practiced law as eye for an eye. It’s the way it is and the way it has always been. We should stop trying to change them. Oh, and let them war with each other. World peace is not necessarily necessary.

So basically, what I’m saying is - let the world be and let’s focus on ourselves. Sure, there should be humanitarian efforts in as many places as will have us, but not war. As soon as we are unappreciated, we cut the funding, we cut the supply, we cut the protection. Simple as that.

A couple Simrad shots from our boat while we relaxed over the weekend. I took them to show the lake temp at 34” below the surface which happened to be 79.3 degrees. This water temp should definitely be at a deeper thermocline this time of year but with unseasonably cool (and record breaking) temps for 4-5 consecutive days, it’s to be expected I guess. Burrrrr

Looks like NWSOUN had to tap into their snow forecast graphics to depict the amount of rain we are about to have in OK.
Also, the ECMWF is dumping hard too. An interesting heavy rain event is on our doorstep!

Here’s a look at 60 hours out, total precip as represented by the NAM, GFS & ECMWF. All three are generous to areas in dire need of water but intensity bullseyes are quite different for each, geographically. ECM really takes off with rainfall totals - and over a large area to boot. I’m anxious to see how this plays out. Bring on the rain!
