2010 Superbowl Commercial Recap

Alright, every year I post a few commercials I thought were most memorable.  In marketing it does not matter in the least how funny, serious or over-the-top your message is, it’s how impactful and memorable it is.
For example, one of the funnier commercials was the Betty White / football commercial.  Problem is, I only vaguely remember what the advertisement was for: Snickers.  Did you remember?
To this end, the two commercials that stood out to me most to me were the Dorito’s Dog Collar 30-second spot and the Dove 1-minute spot (Betty White spot was unavailable at the time of this writing).

Doritos scored big with product placement, message and humor.  No one will forget that tricky dog… Snickers scored with a viral “did you see that” type of spot with great production and talent, just lacked product placement.  Regardless, they both were damn funny.  Doritos wins though for the “Steve Miller’s most impactful ‘humorous’ Superbowl commercial spot” for having product, message and production nailed.

Aside from the above two humorous ads above, the two below are a little more serious and had great impact:

Gatorade and the NFL have huge winners here. Both of these 1-minute spots are tremendously effective as story-tellers; one verbal, the other simply eye-candy. Both kept you interested throughout the full advertisement and at the end of both, you know exactly what the message was.  These win for message and production.

The most impactful “what the hell just happened here” spot was only 15-seconds and was probably one of the biggest advertising influences of the game:

Now that’s just funny.

Intel and  Hyundai were not that great in my opinion while the Brett Favre Hyundai commercial seems to be the favorite of many.  It is humorous, yeah, but does it accomplish anything?  Did you want to buy a car at the end of it?  Then there is GoDaddy.  They have the money for spots; they have the money to hire talent.  They apparently do not have the money to hire a creative production company.  What a waste.

I wish Hulu were still in the mix.  They were so good at all three aspects of effective advertising.  I guess they could not pull funds together this year; per an article I just read.

Until next year.

OK Winter Storm: Sweeps Edition

I have been joking around about the winter weather we expect tomorrow here in Oklahoma and the media’s take on it.  We are in the beginning of a sweeps period for television and we all know how this works.  Bring in as much viewership as possible to prove “share”.

Now this is generally where I spend a couple paragraphs giving examples of things being blown out of proportion.  Not tonight.  The superbowl party I attended wore me out and I just don’t have the strength.  Lucky you.  I did take a moment to snag some graphics so you can make your own judgment call.  The first is an image I have created using F5.  This is what I feel is a good representation of what will actually happen.  Click to enlarge.

The following images were grabbed after the 10 o’clock news from the OKC stations that actually had graphics available. Again, Click to enlarge.

Stupidity, Taco Mayo Style

You never know what you might find in a public restroom. Usually this would branch off into something totally unsanitary I happened across but not today. Nope.
I found this gem in the Taco Mayo mens restroom a couple weeks ago and thought it was pretty dang funny.
I wonder what makes someone think to themselves: “I should whip out my pen right now and write something about a different restaurant in a different state”?
Guess I should carry a pen with me everywhere I go in case the mood strikes.

HoarFrost

Hit the yard again this morning after discovering we had freezing fog overnight and yet again, I had the opportunity to shoot something I have never shot before.  Turns out this phenomenon is not common in Oklahoma so this was a treat.

Moore roads, fisheye shots and lens rental

You’re sitting there wondering how the hell I’m going to tie in all the title subjects, aren’t you?  Well, I don’t do it well but all of them are in here!

Roads are decent today so we ventured out of the house for food and a change of scenery.  I have to say The City of Moore did an amazing job of clearing the roads of snow and ice.  Not sure I’ve experienced efficiency like this after a winter weather event in Oklahoma.  Kudos.

I borrowed a fisheye for a little while today and shot around at some ice and snow covered bushes, limbs, structures, etc.  This was an attachment to my 18-55IS Canon kit lens so with the basic set-up I took around 100 shots, of which these looked decent enough in my quick browse through the set to edit for the blog.  Might extract more tomorrow.

I have considered a true fisheye lens for chasing for a while now but after shooting today, I’m not sure its a viable option.  Depth of field is extreme which is fine for macro images but not as good for the landscape shots I would want to use it for 90% of the time.  I’m unsure if a true fisheye (non-attachment) will accomplish what I want.  I’m interested in anyone’s opinion or experience if they are willing.  Probably my best bet will be to rent one of these and give it a shot.

While on the subject of renting, I think this may be the way I go for chase season this year.  I own my primary chasing lens (10-22 Ultra Wide Canon) as well as my kit and a basic zoom.  The lenses I do not own but I’m interested in are over $2k and I just don’t think I would use them enough to justify the cost; at least not right now and certainly not without trying them in the field first, which in itself is another good reason for me to rent.
I’m amazed by the cost fluctuation between the popular lens rental companies.  A 10-day rental for a specific lens might be $150 at one outlet and $275 at another.  I’m guessing maybe quantity available has something to do with the pricing, I’m still learning.  Regardless, I have found a great shop for lens rental with reasonable pricing that I will be happy to list here for anyone interested once I make my reservations for this spring.  Have to ensure they are in stock for myself, right?

Look for some final thoughts on this last storm coming up next week.  The news media (not on-air mets) butchered the hell out of it and I have a lot to say.

Ice Ice Baby

Yeah, lame joke, I know.  Anyway, it’s snowing like mad now here in Moore and we’re enjoying a slow day at the Miller Casa.
I’ve been taking photos but only really have the attention span right now to post a couple.  More are forthcoming, rest assured.  I plan to get out a little later for some better photo opps than what my front and back yards will yield.  Did I mention it’s a slow day here?  Click to enlarge:

Winter Wx Update – Storm is here

Very busy today so the personal blog may be a little neglected.  These marathon events are a pain in the butt when it comes to keeping up with business and personal blogs and such.  Take care out there and be careful!

TX/OK Winter Wx Update

Went through and ran some maps in F5 with the above results.  The GFS maps are based on 18z data, NAM 00z data.  I’m throwing my hands up in the air with the surface and 700 temps.  Seems to me the cold air is approaching much faster than was indicated on earlier runs but that does not seem to be the consensus by the powers that be.  They’re smarter than me and write in all caps so this should be left to them, I suppose.
I’ll leave looking at temps up to you because that would simply be too many maps for the ol blog here.  Anyway, NAM still keeps substantial snow to our north for the duration of the event and plenty of precip below the snow line with only approaching colder temps  in the low levels to determine the difference between getting a ton of sleet and a good coating of ice; or both.  Here’s a good set of “precip type” maps
This has been the same issue we have been wrangling for three days but by now things be coming together better than they are, at least in my mind.

One way or another, we will have rain and some other form of precip sometime in the next 36 hours.  There, there’s you’re forecast.

Make sure you are following ChaserTV on twitter http://twitter.com/chasertv for alerts and notification of live streaming video from this storm.

Oklahoma Winter Weather

First off, here is the OUN weather briefing released around 2:15pm today.  Be careful, the met talks REALLY fast.  ha.
Also, some good mapping from NWSTSA

<—- To the left is a GFS map to ponder as everyone tries to wrap their brain around the18z NAM which has cut a swath of ice through Central OK into NE OK with the accumulating snow in extreme N OK and S KS. Sorry Mike U, no ECMWF maps.

At this point I will again state that I do not envy on-camera mets at all in situations like this.  No matter what anyone “pinpoints”, it’s not exact and now, if the NAM verifies, areas marked for snow will not even be in the same mode as previous forecasts have suggested.  Rough.

Me?  I have prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws our way.  The generator is prepped, fueled and ready to run, there is plenty of food in the house to feed us for that 24 hours or so we might be locked in, and of course, my ChaserTV live stream will be up in static form for a few stations to use as the storm progresses.
If this turns out to not be a huge deal around Moore, OK where I am, I have the Jeep ready to roll and camera batteries charged, memory cards empty.

Bring it on.
